To us at Spartan Fitness, this is how we define Fitness and Health. This is the basis for our philosophy/methodology from which we build upon.
Fitness is much more than just a simple workout, sitting on a machine, or some cookie-cutter routine. One size does not fit all. To be successful at reaching our goals of being as fit and healthy as possible, we need to explore what Fitness means. By understanding it we can become more accurate when striving towards our personal goals. Spartan Fitness is an intellectual community, broadening the horizon for this industry.
Adaptability is Key
Defining Fitness isn’t as straight forward as you’d presume. Infact, as the science evolves, so must the industry and therefore the definition of Fitness. Spartan Fitness accepts this and like the great Bruce Lee once said ‘Be like water’, we will not be so rigid in our thoughts and practices, we shall be Adaptable. As the research progresses, so do we and we encourage our members to take this journey with us as we grow and evolve ahead of the Industry.
We must be Objective in our Research
We must throw out the garbage, the pseudo (junk) science, the magazines, the trends and fads, the late night infomercials, many of the studies (that have too many loose ends), the bad advice, and all of the advertising and marketing that had once pulled our emotional strings. Spartans have the potential for much more than that.
Research, accurate studies, science, risk to reward ratios, trial and error are all methods in which we use to filter through the vastness of information which this industry (sadly) has accumulated. When we do this, we have our final product. A diamond in the rough. It is clean, proven, and a rarity.

Building Knowledge and Metal Toughness
It has be proven that mental toughness will grant a higher rate of success. Not only with massive or long term tasks, but also the smaller, everyday things. If you are mentally not ‘in it’, you are likely to fail. Therefore, mapping strategies for building a strong mental foundation is a necessity. Building knowledge of Fitness and Health topics so that we can make the best choices is a requirement for success. The Fitness industry is very one-dimensional and never dives into this topic of mental fortitude. Go in, do your workout, go home. It works for some (usually those who already have the mental willpower to withstand). But for the rest, we need to build it. Spartan Fitness reflects that need to build mental fortitude and intellectual stimulation in order to succeed, it is a great and unique aspect of our methodology.
Birds of a Feather
Social Health should be centered around your goals. If you strive to lose weight, than surrounding yourself with people that like to eat fast food and not exercise will only inhibit your success. Spartan Fitness brings its members together to build lifelong friendships. We surround ourselves with like-minded(and behavioral) people. Group activities, trips, pot-luck dinners, hikes, movie night and game night are all ways in which we are coming together(outside of class). We are here to pick you up if you fall. This is another factor often overlooked by the Fitness industry. Instead, we are all here to encourage one another, to help and build friendships that ultimately aid us in our pursuit of Fitness and Health.
One Size Does Not Fit All
Cookie-cutter routines only build cookie cutter individuals. Fitness and Health should not be approached with a one size fits all methodology. How you pursue your goals, being as fit and healthy as you can be, and corrective exercise needs to be personalized. Everybody is different and our model/methodology needs to reflect that. Spartan Fitness is a representation of that sort of versatility and individuality.
A great example of this is learning your family health history and getting a genetic test done. This changes our perspective individually. My approach to a healthier lifestyle will reflect my genetic predispositions. I will become empowered by knowing my body on a deeper level. This changes my area of focus as I strive for better Health. This is preventative medicine and Spartan Fitness takes these concepts into the gym setting as we strive to reduce inflammation and correct imbalances on an individual basis.

Fitness is no different. To maximize my level of fitness, I need to know who I am on a deeper level. Just doing a cookie-cutter routine, is great for being general, but it isn’t customized enough for the individual. Because of this, injuries do occur due to imbalances that were not addressed and performance/function can plateau out and even decrease because of a lack of specificity. Cookie-cutter methodologies have become popular in recent years in attempting to define Fitness. As stated before, this is a huge disservice as it has caused many injuries. These methods have pushed away individual goals to only honor the goals of the group. Goal setting is a big motivator and requires us to have specificity within our model.
Spartan Fitness’ Three Pillars of Fitness and Health
Fitness as preventative medicine is a new concept that requires individualization. Spartan Fitness assesses each member to establish a greater understanding of that person. Three concepts are established, in what we call the Three Fitness and Health Pillars. What the person wants(goals), what every person should have (general preparedness) and what the person needs (corrective strategies). This builds a program specific for the individual that will not only bring us to a state of greater fitness, but will also bring us to our goals and most importantly prevent future injuries by correcting muscular/mechanics issues. For our members, the Fitness and Health Pillars are defined with greater specificity.
This a big change from the norm. But it is as accurate as you can get when defining Fitness and Health. Spartan Fitness is a unique methodology and facility that requires its members to be actively engaged in the experience. No where else can you train like this. Spartan Fitness brings mental training and social building to the gym, where it used to be just about the physical. It requires a lot more work for our trainers, so we expect that hard work to be given back to us by our members.
